On the not-so-off chance that Reverend Villay has us tailed, we did, indeed, go straight to the police station, and when I saw a pickup truck crawl by the parking lot as we got out and pretended to need to lean on each other for moral support rather than because we were still laughing hysterically over the fact that Santa Man was actually named Nicholas, I knew we’d made a good choice.

Inside, the deputy at the front desk told us that Santiago was waiting and sent us down the hall with a smirk as we continued to break out in bursts of laughter and wipe the tears from our eyes. My belly ached in the best way, and the laughing was a much-needed tension reliever.

But unfortunately, as soon as I saw Santiago’s face, all that tension came rushing right back. He lips were thin, and the look he gave me when we walked in sucked the last bit of laughter out of my chest.

“What were you thinking?” he asked in a voice that was more piercing because of its quietness.

I stared at him for a moment and then I collapsed into a chair. “I’m sorry,” I said. “It’s just that you said you couldn’t get up there, and all I could think about was Renee, and all those other women . . . and all my friends who have never gotten justice . . .” I knew I was rambling, and I could feel the tears threatening to tumble after all the words, but I couldn’t stop myself. I looked over at Mika, and she looked about to cry, too. My words finally stumbled to a halt, and I sat and waited for the lecture.

Instead, Santiago sat down, dropped his head, and said, “I’m sorry. As soon as you said you were in The Hollow, I knew what you were doing, and I was terrified, Paisley. But I understand why you did what you did. And it worked.” He looked up at me then, “At least I hope it worked.”

Mika and I looked at each other, and then we both began to nod with vigor. “It did work,” she said. “We got in, and we got the offer of a tour.”

“Plus an invitation to church on Sunday.” I felt a little smug just saying it. “They know all about Scott, too, and they didn’t look any too happy that he’d been arrested. We actually used him to play off your call, so if anyone asks, you demanded we come in, okay?”

A smile slowly spread across the sheriff’s mouth. “Got it. Now, tell me everything you saw, and let’s make a plan for Sunday.”

I stared at him for a moment before I could speak. “You want us to go?”

“Want and need are two different things? But first, give me the scoop.” He pulled his notepad close and jotted down notes about everything we said from the tree stands at the entrance to the Lost-like houses and the big building that looked like a horrible hospital for people with mental illnesses.
